The game was a critical and commercial success, it leads to the production of sequels, prequels, and spinoffs, Resident Evil 2 upon its release became the fastest-selling video game in North America, selling 380,000 copies and grossing $19 million its debut weekend alone, surpassing the previous record set by Final Fantasy VII and surpassing the revenue of all Hollywood movies except for Titanic that same weekend. Resident Evil made its debut on the PlayStation in 1996 and was later ported to the Sega Saturn. Resident Evil originally began as a 1993 3D remake of the game "Sweet Home", a video game adaptation of the 1989 Japanese horror film of the same name developed and published by Capcom and released for the Japanese Nintendo Famicom, with the game's developer Tokuro Fujiwara and Shinji Mikami taking elements seen in the original "Sweet Home," from gameplay elements, such as limited inventory space, to its mansion setting, and implementing them into the original Resident Evil.
