It was a hell of an introduction to the Iron Bowl, and I’ll never forget it. Without warning, one of them grabbed me, hollered, “War Damn Eagle, Blondie,” and kissed me exuberantly. A party of Auburn students-all guys, and all fairly lubricated-came towards us. There were so many brief rehashings that we didn’t get out of the stadium for over an hour after the game was over. We were stopped every few feet by other Auburn fans, who all shook my dad’s hand and briefly rehashed the game. My dad was jubilant, my mom (a former Auburn cheerleader) thrilled, and my sister and I were experiencing nirvana on a huge scale. A couple of minutes later, it did, when David Langner intercepted a pass, and the game was essentially over. And when that kick went dead through the uprights, I didn’t think life could get any better. This time, when Gardner Jett came out to do the honors, he was given a hero’s reception. When the second punt attempt was blocked, a third of the stadium went insane the other two-thirds stood there staring, their red and white shakers trailing on the ground and their mouths open in shock. We were full of hope now, and we made a lot more noise. I remember looking over and saying, “It’s okay, Dad, he made it,” and my dad grudgingly said, “Well, at least we’re on the damn board.” When the first blocked field goal happened a few minutes later, we were all on our feet screaming, and the tiny pockets of blue and orange that dotted the stadium (we were the visitors that year) began to come alive. My dad was apoplectic he wanted them to go for it on 4th down. When Gardner Jett came trotting out to kick that first field goal, with the score 16-0, he looked like a 7th grader who’d somehow wandered onto the wrong field. let’s see if you other mods will continue this HEY I AM ALIVE - mod Atisuto. We sat in the sun on the east side of the stands, on one of those humid, warm afternoons in early December. I was a senior in high school, and my parents (both Auburn graduates) had decided, for the first time ever, to take me and one of my younger sisters to the game instead of their best friends-who were UA graduates and incredibly obnoxious fans.
